About Lipreading

Lipreading is about seeing the visual clues of the spoken message – the movements and shapes of the lips, the tongue, the lower jaw as well as the eyes, the eyebrows and the facial expresion and gesture.

The lipreader will observe the syllables and the rhythm, phrasing and stress of speech. The lipreader will also use anticipation and awareness of spoken language situations. Even the most skilled lipreader cannot accurately identify every word. But the practice of lipreading can help hard of hearing people achieve greater comprehension of other people's speech.
